Tasmania Blood Collections

Tasmania Blood Collections

Do you live in Tasmania and want to help improve our understanding of Parkinson’s disease?

Researchers are inviting volunteers to take part in a new study collecting blood samples and clinical information to better understand the genetics of Parkinson’s disease and related conditions.

This project is part of an international effort to improve early detection, develop better treatments, and ultimately work towards a cure.

Prize Draw

By contributing to this research, you can also be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 2 x $200 gift cards!

About the Project

The Tasmania Parkinson’s Project is contributing to the Global Parkinson’s Genetics Program (GP2), a worldwide collaboration aiming to accelerate discoveries in Parkinson’s disease by bringing together genetic and clinical data from across the globe.

As part of this research, we are collecting blood samples to better understand the genetic factors involved in Parkinson’s disease.

By taking part, you will be helping to build a resource that supports researchers internationally in improving diagnosis, understanding disease progression, and developing new treatments.

Who Can Take Part?

We are inviting adults living in Tasmania, including:

  • People diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease
  • People with conditions related to Parkinson’s (including multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome, and dementia with Lewy bodies)
  • People without Parkinson’s (healthy volunteers)

All groups are essential to help us understand what changes are specific to Parkinson’s disease.

What Does Participation Involve?

Participation is straightforward and can be completed online and in-person

Online or in-person Questionnaires

  • Brief questionnaires about your health and possible symptoms (approximately 20-30 minutes)

In-person Blood Collection

  • A simple blood sample (approximately 15 minutes) at one of our University of Tasmania campuses

When and where Are Appointments Available?

Appointments will be available throughout June, July, August and September 2026.

We will be visiting each University of Tasmania campus to offer appointments:

  • Hobart
  • Launceston
  • Burnie

Why Take Part?

By participating, you will:

  • Contribute to research aimed at improving early detection of Parkinson’s disease
  • Help researchers better understand genetic risk factors
  • Support the development of future treatments
  • Be part of a global research effort through GP2
  • Get to meet the researchers and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before or after your blood collection

Every participant plays an important role in advancing Parkinson’s research.
